Moong Dal Khichdi


  • 3 cups split green moon dal

  • 1 cup rice

  • 1.5 tablespoons salt (or to taste)

  • 1 teaspoon turmeric powder

  • 2 tablespoons ghee

  • 1 cup water (or as needed)


  • In a thick bottom pot/sufuria, mix moong dal and rice, and wash at least thrice.

  • Now add in water, salt, turmeric powder and 1 tablespoon ghee, mix well.

  • Cover the pot and cook over a very low flame or on a hot plate with the lowest temperature.

  • Cook for around 2 hours or as needed.

  • You can also pressure cook it with 3-4 whistles.

  • Once khichdi is cooked add 1 tablespoon of ghee and mix well.

  • Leave for 2 more minutes and serve.

  • Serve with kadhi, milk, yogurt, pickle, or papad.
